A Gentleman in Moscow

Wonderful and genius

A story that is told through the eyes of an aristocrat who is under house arrest this story puts a spell on you. How? With a simply story, often funny with an eccentric main character, a curious child and other characters full of life. All the scenes in the story are well crafted and take you into the complex relationship between people, people and politics, and ethics. A must read.

The Little Paris Bookshop

A little disappointing

A lovely read but I did expect more from the writer after the hype. Well written, great description but the story drag on after a point especially the mystery letter. The adventures on the book barge don't really fulfil or give a resolution to the story.

A Christmas Carol

A classic

I always read this at Christmas to remind me that despite the hardships I may have or have suffered through the year, we can overcome them. I love the ghosts and Dickens has a way with words that can make you laugh while presenting a serious theme - the power of greed over life.

The Paris Wife

A beautiful read

I love this book. It's full and takes you back to Hemingway's Paris. His life, simple and at times poor, his wife always by his side regardless of his drinking and rather careless at times attitude. This book will show you how the life of a fantastic writer is not the glamorous one you have in your mind but one that is simple yet dangerous, sad yet wonderful.

Little Fires Everywhere

Brilliant

This book will make you question what makes a good parent, the one who has everything in order or the one who takes chances and never settles for less. Who is the ideal child? The one who always obeys or the one who is a misfit? The narrative may be simply but it helps you understand in depth difficult and complex characters. The story makes you realise that we all have incorrect perceptions about people which sometimes leads us to take wrong actions and to misjudge. It also makes us question what is right and wrong and most important who are we to decide between the two? A great read that focuses on problems middle class and poorer societies the world over face.

Big Little Lies

Could be better

An easy read that doesn't fulfill the avid reader. A few things in the plot didn't add up and it reminded me off a TV soap - far too much tragedy and not enough resolutions.

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine

Brillaint

Gail Honeyman makes it so easy for you to understand and appreciate the life of a woman who is fighting to survive in a world she doesn't understand so well. You will love the main character and will find yourself trying to stop her from getting hurt and will wish she were real for you to help. The ending, a real twist in the plot, where we find out about Eleanor's horrific past, will leave you in tears. Best of all, it's not overcomplicated but written simply yet with all the details you will need t understand Eleanor and her life.

The Help

Black live matter.

Focusing on the hardships black people faced in America during the late 20th century, this book will leave you with a huge respect for all black people who have been belittled in modern day history. It will make you understand why black lives matter and how, white people, have to really step up their game in promoting equality.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

The real Hollywood

A very well developed book that focuses on the reality behind the glamour of Hollywood which uses and traumatises deeply people. Evelyn has to cover up her real identity, as a lesbian, and hide her real love for a woman by marrying different men to please Hollywood and her fans. Marriages of convenience, one for love, a few out of pain. The narrative is driven by a strong voice and will have you turning pages to reach the unexpected plot twist at the end.

The Book Thief
