Amazing

So I finished this book today and I just had to go ahead and write a review about it because I absolutely fell in love with it. As an adult sometimes I have a hard time connecting with ya books but this one was the perfect mix of a soft read and correct anxiety representation, so I had to check it out. Also, this book helped me get out of my slump so if you’re looking for something to read this is the book for you. “I want the world, I think. Even if it scares me.” Let’s start with our main heroine Steffi. Steffi suffers from selective mutism among many other things since she can remember herself, she loves animals and currently works at a kennel. Now let me tell you her anxiety was so well portrayed here I could feel many parts of this book hitting close to home (especially the part with her talking about her thoughts in the bus) and I have to thank the author for that. In this book we see steffi’s journey and how she tried to help herself not because she was embarrassed of her mental illness, or she wanted to fix herself but because she wanted to feel better with herself as she was. This story showed us how a girl like our heroine deals with family issues and how parents can help their kids instead of adding extra anxiety to the mix…..even tho her mom acted kinda ableist towards her daughter at the first chapters steffi ended up having four supportive parents at the end of the book, parents that actually listened to her and understood her mental illness. Tem!!! I just adored their friendship, Steffi and Tem had been friends since forever and this book just made my heart melt with how Tem has always treated her friend, always being there for her even when things are hard. Friendships are not supposed to always be that easy they have their ups and downs and if you feel differently this book is here to change your mind. Love seeing healthy female friendships in books we need more woman love in this world!! «With lightning, you’re never really sure if that’s what it was; it’s just a flash. Thunder, you know. You feel it.« And finally our boy Rhys, god do I love soft boys in ya books they’re everything to me. So Rhys is deaf, and we follow his journey as a new student in Steffi’s school, he wants to become a video game developer and joins this high school to kind of challenge himself. They meet there and start bonding because she is the only other person in school that knows BSL (this book really made me want to start learning BSL BTW). Their romance wow they just fit together and not just because he is the deaf boy, and she’s the mute girl they have so many things in common, they started as friends and OMG THEY’RE SO ADORABLE these dorks texting all the time and being shy about their feelings ugh kinda miss being young and innocent about the world. If you’re looking for an extra sweet romance book about first loves with anxiety/deafness/poc rep and not a big plot just teenagers learning how to deal with the world this one is the book for you ❤ This story spreads awareness and open up your eyes a bit more about the world outside, highly recommended.

Disappointed

Ugh, this book didn't let me love it as much as I was willing to... On the one hand, it was enlightening to learn about selective mutism and the parts about the protagonist's anxiety disorder and struggle felt quite realistic. However, since I'm not going through such issues myself I can't help but feel that maybe selective mutism isn't depicted as realistically and as raw as it could (and perhaps) should be depicted . And the reason why I feel that way is because it felt like the whole situation was being sugarcoated by the romance, which was way too cheesy, cliché and unnaturally ideal for my own taste.
